"....and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is My beloved son, listen to him!" (Mark 9:7b)
Mountain top experience, excitement, big changes and a lot happening. We know this story because we talk about it every year at this time. Peter, James and John with Jesus on the mountain and "he was transformed before them." (vs. 2). We talk about Peter opening mouth and inserting foot, talking before he stops to think and what we do when we are excited and confused. I, personally, love Peter and can identify with the open mouth insert foot - what about you? At the same time we tend to skip over two things. 1st - God tells the three Disciples, and us, "this is My beloved son, LISTEN to him." (emphasis mine) And second, Jesus tells the three not to talk about what they had seen "until the Son of Man should rise from the dead." (vs. 9) Jesus IS risen!! We will celebrate Easter in about 6 weeks (Lent starts this week!) but we also celebrate every Sunday. WE can talk about how Jesus has transformed us!! So..... no matter what you call it - "mountain top," "life changing," or a "come to Jesus" meeting how has "listening" (vs. 7) changed your life? Who are you telling about it? How can you help others to see, hear, listen and follow?

"And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him;" (Mark 5:20a)
It can be almost as difficult to "get back into the regular schedule" as it is to take an actual break -- time away, vacation, what ever you want to call it. It can be even more difficult, especially around "new" people to talk about where we see God and what we see God doing in our lives. Have you thought about who you could tell when you see God at work? Have you thought about sharing -- even a beautiful sunset or sunrise? The Gospel reading, in Mark 5, is about a man healed from a "legion" of demons. Some of the crowd run away afraid, some encourage Jesus to go "away" but this man goes and begins to "proclaim what great things Jesus had done for him." We can feel God's presence with us - Emmanuel. We can see the many things God has done for us -- God's beautiful creation, sunset and sunrises to name a few. The question is........ can we "go tell" others? |
