"On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary, his mother, and they knelt down and paid him homage." (Matthew 2:11a)
Did you have all the gifts you needed this year? Have you ever found out "surprise" you were supposed to bring something? Or found out, unexpectedly, you need at least one more gift? What do you do? Do you have a stash of gifts? Each of us probably have our own way of solving the problem but it is something to think about. Today is the Sunday we celebrate Epiphany which is actually Jan. 6th. It is the Sunday we talk about the Wise Men getting to Bethlehem. They aren't surprised by the need for gifts. They have come prepared with gifts of "gold, frankincense and myrrh." (2:11b) The three gifts is how it was decided there were three Wise Men. There could have been way more but everyone brought one of the three gifts. OR each one brought all three. We don't know. One thing we do know is Jesus is a toddler. We are told "they saw the child" (2:11a) not they saw the baby. And Herod killed children two and under. The Holidays are pretty much over. We are practicing writing 2022 on our checks and for dates. We have, we think, given all our gifts. I have to ask, however, what gift are you giving to God. On this day we celebrate the Wise Men giving gifts to the child - what are we giving? Something to think about.....
