I don't know about you but I ask a LOT of questions. Sometimes it is a subject I love so I want to know more. Sometimes it is something being "added" to my schedule so it is a "say what!?" kind of attitude. Sometimes it is something new I'm learning and I'm trying to understand -- what is happening, how it is happening and what I'm supposed to be doing. It each case it is the attitude that makes the difference - right?
Today's Gospel reading is Luke 1:30--35 where Mary is learning what is going to be happening. Last week Zechariah's questions was a "say what!!?" question, kind of with an attitude (my interpretation), and the consequences were Zechariah couldn't talk for about 10 months. Mary is also questioning but in a different way. Her's is more an "okay this will happen but... how?" question. Her response, once she understands is "be it done to me according to your word." (v. 38) We are also told, in verse 39, how Mary "went with haste" to be with Elizabeth. God is still speaking to each of us, asking us to follow where God is leading. Yes, we question but what is our attitude as we question? Are we, like Zechariah, going "say what!!?" OR, like Mary, are we saying "okay, but how?" Something to think about as we continue to prepare to celebrate Jesus' birthday.
