If you are like me when you read "make room" your first thought is "in what?" Do we make room in our coffee -- for the special creamer? Do we make room in our houses for more people? Do we make room, as several advertisements would have us believe, for more technology, gadgets, bigger/better things? Or...... do we make room, time, for stronger relationships? A stronger relationship with God, with family and with friends?
Our Scripture reading this morning is about Elizabeth Luke 1:24-25 "making room" for a new baby. Like Abraham and Sarah Zechariah and Elizabeth are "old" when Elizabeth becomes pregnant. God is fulfilling the promise by starting with the prophet who will "go as a forerunner before Him." (Luke 1:17) We are told Zechariah questioned this and couldn't talk because of the questions. Imagine Elizabeth trying to understand when her husband can no longer speak to explain. We aren't told if Elizabeth questioned or not. We are told she remained "in seclusion for 5 months." (v. 24) A new baby, probably especially at their age, would require some major changes - major "making room."
So........ what is God asking you to do? How is God asking you to make room? An interesting thought with schedules being so busy - maybe God is asking us to "make room" for God in our busy schedules. Maybe, even though we can't spend "5 months" in seclusion we could spend "5 minutes." Something to think about as we prepare to both celebrate Jesus' birthday and prepare for His coming again.
